Elvis has left the building
Normally, when you see a movie is produced by a German corporation or partnership (with the letters GmbH behind the name), the best advice is to RUN AWAY! I like lots of things German -- I lived there and teach the language and culture, after all -- but the German tax code is set up to give all sorts of ridiculous tax benefits to film production companies, so movies often get made that everyone associated with them knows are utter shit because the producers end up making money before the first ticket is ever sold. Without this loophole in the tax code, for instance, Uwe Boll would be selling Doner Kebabs in some town thirty miles outside of Dresden instead of directing thirty-million-dollar movies based on video games.
So when we saw "Elvis Has Left the Building" tonight on DVD, I was worried to see that it was an Equity Pictures Medienfonds GmbH production. I knew nothing about the film in advance, so seeing that in the credits was a bad first impression, but things quickly picked up from there.
The plot in nuce: Kim Basinger's character Harmony Jones is a cosmetics rep who met Elvis once as a girl and suddenly starts causing accidents that kill lots of Elvis impersonators on their way to a Las Vegas convention in comically gruesome ways. Think "Honeymoon in Vegas" meets "Final Destination." Genius. I laughed my ass off for an hour and a quarter.
And the movie snobs among you should note this movie had a cast with not one, not two, but THREE Academy Awards for acting. Of course, two of them belong to the dead Elvis with his head in a mailbox....
