Home sick today
I just saw Inki off to work and called in sick. She noted it was the first time I'd ever called in sick to work, and thinking back I reckon she's right about that. I did miss three days of work last year after I broke my leg, but I didn't have to call in sick since I broke the leg at work in front of my colleagues and I think everyone thought it best I not come back and teach before the Vicodin had worn off. Probably not a bad idea not to let me teach stoned.
Incidentally we don't really cover classes here when a teacher is out. The students know what they ought to be doing and can be trusted to look after themselves without an adult looking over their shoulder.
This illness is my own damned stupid fault. I have been in execrable shape ever since breaking the leg and have only run sporadically since. I was feeling really good Monday and pushed myself really hard to do 10K at the gym in a halfway decent time and apparently wore myself down to the point that the next bug to come around could drop me like a sack of potatoes. Same thing happened after the San Francisco half-marathon two years ago; I wasn't in shape for the race, ran full out, and promptly got sick. Same symptoms: hacking cough, chills, body ache. Just like last time I spent the night under two blankets in an overcoat and scarf. Now the chill is gone and it's just the cough and lack of energy to go, so it looks like I'm on the mend as long as I take it easy the next day or two.
There's a lesson to be learned here, and I hope I've learned it this time. I'm going to have to be happy with crappy 10K times for a while to come yet.
