Premature burial?

While getting the house ready we've been working really hard in the evenings on top of our work schedule, so I told Andor that Inki and I were planning to sleep in last Sunday. Unfortunately (and counterintuitively for English speakers) the Norwegian idiom is "å sove ut" (literally "to sleep out"). "Å sovne inn" is a polite euphemism for "die," something akin to "pass away." Guess which one I used?
While we're talking about the language of death...Native English speakers need to resist the temptation to use the common catch-all "thanks for everything." Norwegians are a bit more literal-minded, and someone hasn't done "everything" they can be thanked for until they're dead, so "takk for alt" is something you only see engraved on headstones. It confuses people here when you say it to someone who isn't dead yet. Trust me. It does.
