Signing our lives away, or second-class citizen
We just got back from the bank and signed the papers for the seven-digit bank loan to complete the purchase of our new home. Of course, since it´s in Norwegian kroner, that´s six digits American, but that´s still serious money. Now we just need to meet the agent at noon Friday to take over possession and we´re in!
The guy from the bank, Frode, (which means "wise" or "learned," not "hobbit") also offered us lots of different insurance packages that we discussed at our previous meeting to cover our car, our possessions, etc. The house is already covered. There was also a life insurance package, which makes sense, since if one of us were to die we would still need to make the mortgage payments. It turns out, however, that I can´t get life insurance here as a non-citizen until I´ve lived here five years and that I can´t be Inki´s beneficiary either; the insurance would have to go to her estate and then on to me after estate tax. Not that that´s something we´re worried about, but it´s a bit silly. I could cut the waiting period from five years by getting Norwegian citizenship after two years here (years married to a Norwegian + years resident in Norway must be at least eight) but would have to renounce my US citizenship, which will happen right about three months after hell freezes over.
