Sleep for fifteen minutes?
Just wondering:
The equivalent of the DMV/DOT here has a big campaign going to encourage tired motorists to find a safe place to pull over and nap for 15 minutes before continuing on, saying it's the only thing proven to help when you're falling asleep behind the wheel.
I can't imagine this campaign in the States for some reason. Maybe it's because sleeping in your car by a busy highway is how Michael Jordan's daddy got himself killed (NEVER stop in Robeson County, NC for any reason whatsoever), but I don't know -- maybe there's research to support this idea. I used to listen to audiobooks to stay awake while driving when music wouldn't do the job, but here we drive so little that it's not really an issue.
Have any of you in the US heard about this "sleep to stay awake" idea?

Hi Robert -
I think it's more of a "sleep to stay alive" idea. My husband Martin sometimes needs to go to an office in Morgan Hill (south of San Jose). After spending 1.5 hours driving there, 10 hours of work and then driving home again he often pulls off of Highway 280 when he gets too tired to drive into a parking lot somewhere for a short nap. It makes a huge difference in his driving skills for the remainder of his trip. Now, the next step is for Americans to stop texting or talking on the phone while driving!
Regards,
Heidi
