New toys
Friday night we went shopping and each came home with a new toy. This is remarkable because we're both pretty good at not buying stuff we don't need; Inki is, certainly, but I am too, at least, if like all reasonable adults you consider good single-malt a necessity rather than an indulgence.
Inki got a new iPod Shuffle for working out since I've appropriated her old one for my runs; her new one has twice the memory in just half the size. I got a small handheld GPS unit. I'm not springing for the optional CD-ROM with the very detailed map with restaurants and all that other stuff and which costs as much as the hardware did. I'm not looking for something to do my thinking for me, particularly since part of my reason for buying it is that I want to get to know the local geography a lot better, especially since SOMEONE keeps quizzing me every time we're out driving. ("So how would you get to Midtun from here?" "What's just over that ridge?" etc., etc.)
The other reason is to use it on my runs. It gives me a really good breakdown of distance, elevation, speed, etc. and allows me to mark new waypoints and expand my personal "map" as I explore ever wider swaths of the area. I like to go exploring when I run, and the unit helps me find my way home without backtracking, which is boring. Plus I'd prefer not to go on a long nature run and find myself reenacting the Blair Witch Project.
This is a consideration since I've been working at upping the length and frequency of my runs lately. When I broke my leg a year and a half ago I got out of shape, and it's taken me a good long while to get back into proper form. And while Ella's arrival has meant I have less time to run, she's also great motivation. I want her to see her first Superman movie and think, well, that flying's not a bad trick, but no green space rock is gonna slow MY Daddy down.

Yay for new gadgets! GPS... that would be fun to play with around here... :D
My best grade is in German class. :) I blame it on you.
I'm, by some miracle (called the curve and an attempt at time management), still passing my science classes, but.. eh, whatever. At least I can move to Germany someday if I ever want... as long as they don't kick me out of school (or, more likely, take away my scholarship) before I take a few more classes.
College classes aren't too much fun.
Alexandra,
Sorry to hear you aren't enjoying yourself at NYU as much as you'd hoped. The first classes in any field are the toughest and, unfortunately, the least satisfying, as they tend to cover a lot of ground quickly and are often intended to be difficult in order to discourage too many people from following that course of study. It gets better, I promise.
Glad to hear you're doing well in German, though. Hope things pick up in your other classes too. Also, NYC is a magical place as it gets on to Christmas - enjoy!
Cheers,
R
