Cows and zebras and seals, oh my!
As you may notice from the hat in my profile picture (taken during our Haj to Ben and Jerry's world headquarters in Waterbury, VT) we are very fond of cows and like to see them happily munching away. When we were driving out of San Simeon and past the elephant seal beaches we saw a herd of cows merrily grazing on the hillside, prompting the following conversation with my wife:
R: "Moo."
I: (curious) "Moo-oo?"
R: (more assertively now) "MOO. MOO."
I: (in a manner suggesting rising constipation) "MMMOOOOOOOOOO."
R: (with finality) "Moo."
I love finally getting the last word. If it were only something besides "moo."
Then we did a double take. Was that...? Yes, it was...a zebra, grazing happily besides about a dozen of his cow friends. Turns out Hearst kept a menagerie of exotic animals and some of their descendants are still around.
Only in California.
